R I P DISCO D 1980 - 2007

awful news hit the music world today that Dave Shayman, (aka Disco D) has passed away.
since early this morning message boards and blogs all across the internet are reporting the 27 year old producer, who suffered from depression and bipolarism, was found dead of an apparent suicide.
i got to meet Dave once when he stopped by the office with a gang of brazilian rappers to smoke blunts last year. even just from that brief encounter i sensed this guy was bursting at the fucking seams with ambition.
apparently there was a new movie in the works as well...

Mr. Bad News

dont know a whole lot about dude, but i really am feeling this nasty radioactive sandpaper-your-fucking-face mixture of grime, dubstep, hip-hop, and IDM type of sound that comes from UK based Milanese. theres all types of dark, distorted shit on his latest album, but the ruthless bassline on this one really makes me go insane:

digital devil

yep its on. after a couple years of internal debate, this week i'll officially give in and sell my soul to the digital devil... SERATO SCRATCH.. but GODDAMN am i excited.. sure i'm gonna miss hauling 1 1/2 crates of vinyl to the spot via public transportation. i'll miss being limited to playing only songs that i picked out four hours earlier when i was stoned. and i'll definitely be missing those flimsy ass record sleeves they keep using in europe (what up with that shit anyways), falling apart all over the place.
but on the other hand, being able to play brand new heaters like this here SebastiAn remix of Klaxons' Golden Skans sounds real nice:
Klaxons - Golden Skans (Sebastian Remix)
woweee what the fuck was that! pretty sure i got it from the hollerboard, but haven't really been able to even think straight since i first heard it.
serato is an entirely different game, almost like a video game or something with the added visual element. all your bangers, right before your eyes, organized by bpm... making the actual matching of beats a no brainer and leaving more time for you to go buck wild on the mix. oh yeah and looping functions and all that other shit thats otherwise impossible to do when you are keeping it real. speaking of bpms, i guess this isnt breaking news, but not too long ago i came across this useful little tool called the iTunes BPM Inspector, a lovely counterpart to something like serato. it basically does exactly what you would guess it does (tap the mouse to the beat and it tells you the tempo) but once you've determined the BPM of your track you can set the BPM field of your file in iTunes accordingly with the click of a button.
